To Kill a Mockingbird

The movie that I watched this week is “ To Kill a Mockingbird” which quite frankly has absolutely nothing to do with a bird. I didn’t really know much about this movie except that it was a book. The actually movie came out in 1962 . The main characters in this movie are Scout, Jem, and Dill. Scout is a tom girl who hates being a girl. She is even forced to wear a dress and gets really angry because of it. She is one tough cookie. Jem is her older, and Dill is Jems good friend.
The main conflict in this movie is that a black man named Tom has been accused of raping a white women. Now Jem and Scouts dad (Atticus Finch) has to defend the black guy in court. The problem with this is that segregation in Alabama is very strong. The jury pretty much consisted of all white people so the court was in the white women’s field. Even though the man is innocent nobody is going to believe him. This goes along with how Jem and Scout feel about Boo Radley a man that they no little about but make many assumptions on for example they are sure he is insane. By the end of the movie you will learn the moral of never judging anyone into you are actually in their shoes.
The plot of this story is realistic. I think that people are always going to judge someone when they first meet that’s just how life is but, in this film we start to take a second look as an audience to see if maybe we have had a faulty judgment in the past. The regional dialogue in this movie really makes it what it is, Atticus always says things that took me back and really made me think about what he was saying. His character in this film was phenomenal, he really nailed his part and seemed to always give everyone a chance. I love that the movie was in black and white and Maycomb, the town that they lived in was so laid back it didn’t seem like anything went wrong in this town.
The themes in this film are education and bravery. Throughout the film we learn that Atticus wants his kids to be knowledgeable and makes them read, also he always told his kids of issues that you wouldn’t think they would no about at such a young age. I think that Atticus just really stresses the theme of education onto his kids throughout the whole film. Bravery is also a major theme in the film because being able to stand up to a court of angry white people who hate that you are actually helping a black person shows how brave there father was. The whole idea of being educated on something you believe in is present throughout the film.
The editing for me was kind of blah just because I’m from a time of more advanced technology and black and white just doesn’t do it for me anymore. The shots in this movie were typically lengthy. The first thing that I noticed about this movie is Scout and how she wanted to be a boy. I think this is a perfect example of being comfortable in your own skin. I liked this movie right when it started, I didn’t lose focus and was attentive the whole time. This movie in a way reminds me of Green Mile just because both black men were wrongly accused of a crime. I think AFI put this film on their list, because its such a powerful movie, you really take something from this film in the end. I recommend this to anyone really, maybe not a little kid but, anyone can respect this movie and learn something from it.
